Welcome!

Dear Parents:

Thank you  for allowing your child to participate in the Metropolitan Youth Orchestras of Central Alabama.  Orchestra participation is one of the most rewarding and exciting musical opportunities offered to young musicians. Your investment will produce tremendous dividends throughout your child's life.

Music provides students with a wealth of benefits. In addition to honing their musical, motor and memory skills,  orchestra members learn the nuances of performance and presentation.  In addition, students learn team work, dedication, self-discipline and responsibility which prepares them for eventual success in their chosen professions.   In addition to music theory and application, students also learn problem-solving, goal-setting, and self-expression.  They gain concentration, poise, self-confidence,  and increase hand/eye coordination and dexterity.

Like all of The Arts, music has a profound effect on the academic success of students.  Research shows that music students out-perform other students, and score higher on the SAT.  Most colleges and universities now look for more than good grades on a child's transcript. They want well-rounded students who have  more than basic textbook education.

As we begin a new season, I'm confident that the efforts and achievments of our very talented students will impact and inspire our community .  As the year progresses, I look forward to getting to know each of you.  Please feel free to contact me directly at any time at 205-527-4756

                                                   Sincerely,
                                                   Dwight Houston,
                                                   Music Director
